Police officers in Upland arrested a 17-year-old bicycle thief suspect who fled on foot after he was found to be in possession of drugs and a gun in front of his mother.

According to the Upland Police Department, their investigation began last week when a resident in the 600 block of East 7th Street reported that an e-bike and a regular bicycle were stolen from their property.

While authorities were unable to immediately locate the stolen bikes, the victim was able to, and they alerted police to a post on the online marketplace OfferUp with their “beloved” possession.

“Our Special Investigations [Unit’s]…investigation led to a residence in Fontana,” Upland police said on X. “The suspect was seen driving off from his residence, resulting in a traffic stop.”

During the traffic stop, which was caught entirely on police bodycam video, officers discovered that the juvenile — who was with a woman that police indicated was his mother — had “a couple of reasons to not want to hang around,” including the e-bike as well as a loaded gun and drugs under the seat. He then took off on foot but was tackled to the ground in the middle of the street shortly after, the bodycam footage showed.

A search warrant was later executed at the boy’s residence, but the second bicycle was not found, officials said.

The teen, whose name was not released, was booked into juvenile hall for felony possession of stolen property, possession of a handgun with drugs and resisting arrest.

It was not clarified if the woman seen in the video is facing any charges.
