Roll On Big Joe took advantage of the scratch of favorite Big City Lights to win on his second try at the stakes level in the $100,000, Grade III Palos Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Roll On Big Joe, a 5-year-old gray gelding ridden by Umberto Rispoli for trainer Bob Hess Jr., led virtually all the way to win the 6-furlong sprint easily and pay $6 as bettors’ second choice.
For All Mankind finished second, 3-2 favorite Bartholdy third in a field of five.
Big City Lights was 2-5 on the morning line before being scratched Saturday morning by trainer Richard Mandella.
