WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The D.C. Board of Elections (BOE) will be hosting a Special Election this summer for Ward 8 Councilmember, following Trayon White’s expulsion from the D.C. Council earlier this month.
The BOE said nominations for the seat would open on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and close on April 17.
Early voting will then take place from July 11 through July 14, with election day being held on Tuesday, July 15.
White was expelled after a D.C. Council investigation found he broke city code and council rules. It was the first time the council had taken a vote of its nature.
The investigation kicked off after the former Ward 8 Councilmember was indicted and arrested by the FBI on federal bribery charges last year. It was alleged he accepted cash in exchange for his influence on city contracts. He pleaded not guilty and is set to face trial in 2026.
Despite these accusations, White won reelection this past November with more than 75% of the votes.
Though White has made no formal declaration that he would run for office again, nothing technically prevents him from doing so under D.C. Law. The only thing barring a Councilmember from holding office is a criminal conviction.
