LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – The Palisades Fire had a devastating impact on tens of thousands of Angelenos, with many losing their homes or being forced to evacuate. Over a month later, thousands more continue to be affected, albeit in a less direct way.
Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) has been closed from Chautauqua Boulevard in Santa Monica to Carbon Beach Terrace in Malibu since the fire erupted on January 7. Only emergency personnel, utility crews, and a few local residents are allowed access.
This means drivers from Ventura County, Agoura Hills and the San Fernando Valley, who would normally use canyon roads to reach PCH and L.A.’s Westside, now have to take the busy 101 and 405 freeways. KTLA traffic reporter Ginger Chan says this has made traffic on those already congested arteries far worse.
“People who never used those roads and always took the 405 or the 101 are now affected because there are twice as many drivers,” says Chan. “You need to add at least 20 to 30 minutes to your commute.”
The closure of PCH and also Topanga Canyon isn’t only due to fire damage and recovery. Local and state officials are also worried about mudslides caused by recent rainfall, with more rain expected this week.
“The National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted a moderate risk of heavy rain from February 12 to 14. The decision to keep the roads closed is a precautionary measure in response to and preparation for additional rain,” Caltrans said in a news release on Saturday.
Until PCH reopens, Chan suggests carpooling, changing commute times, or working from home if possible.
“My sister was affected, and her employer allowed her to work from home an extra day,” says Chan. “I think some employers will be understanding.”
