A teen who was racing on an e-bike with other teenagers was injured after colliding with a squad car in front of a police station Friday night.
According to the Simi Valley Police Department, officers responded to the area of Tapo Canyon Road and the 118 Freeway around 7:30 p.m. on reports of three to four juveniles racing e-bikes “at a high rate of speed” on the sidewalk.
“An officer attempted to contact the juveniles, but one fled through the parking lot towards Alamo Street and Michael Clark Memorial Parkway,” SVPD said in a media release issued Saturday morning.
Another officer positioned at the intersection of Alamo and Michael Clark – which is the entrance to the Simi Valley Police Department parking lot – activated their squad car’s lights and siren in an attempt to stop the fleeing teen, but they ran through a red light and attempted to cross in front of the police cruiser.
“The officer quickly stopped to avoid contact,” the SVPD release read. “However, the juvenile crashed the e-bike into the police vehicle’s rear push-bar bumper.”
The teen, whose gender and age were not released, sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
No further information was released, and officials with the California Highway Patrol are handling the investigation.
Authorities noted that a person riding an electric bicycle is “subject to the same provisions” as a person riding a regular bicycle and must follow the rules of the road that motor vehicles follow, pursuant to the California Vehicle Code’s Chapter 1, Division 11, commencing with Section 21200.
