A homicide investigation is underway after a woman was found shot to death in an Encino neighborhood Wednesday night.
Los Angeles police responded to a shooting at a home on the 18000 block of Santa Rita Street at around 7:22 p.m.
Officers found the victim, described only as a 54-year-old woman, with a gunshot wound to the head outside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, a 64-year-old man who police said was her husband, was taken into custody.
A neighbor, Elinor Ahoubim, said her brother initially heard a woman yelling for help outside on the street.
“Then, I don’t know if it was the same lady, but I heard a lady screaming something in Spanish and she sounded very scared,” Ahoubim, recalled. “It’s very frightening.”
Details are limited and it’s unclear what led up to the fatal shooting. Neighbors were shaken over the news in what they say is an otherwise quiet community.
“Encino is supposed to be a very safe neighborhood,” said Ahoubim. “I’ve felt so safe here until now. Seeing all the cops on the street I’m supposed to call home is scary.”
The deadly incident remains under investigation. Neither the suspect’s nor the victim’s identities were released.
