Here’s a roundup of state college men’s lacrosse games on Saturday, Feb. 1:
Division I
No. 5 Maryland 12, No. 20 Richmond 7: Logan McNaney made 14 saves and the host Terps scored the first seven goals while holding the Spiders scoreless for more than 30 minutes in a season-opening win at SECU Stadium in College Park.
It marked the first time Maryland posted a first-half shutout since Feb. 14, 2015, against Navy. The Terps have won 32 consecutive season openers dating to the 1994 season.
Maryland’s defense forced three first-half shot clock violations and five turnovers overall. McNaney, sporting the coveted No. 1 jersey, was the defensive anchor, while Will Schaller, Daniel Kelly (Calvert Hall), George Stamos and Jackson Canfield all forced a turnover.
On the offensive end, the Terps received production from their transfers and returning stars. Matthew Keegan (Binghamton) had three goals and two assists, while Bryce Ford (Fairfield) added two goals and one assist in their first appearances with the Terps. Returners Kelly, Zach Whittier, Sean Creter and Braden Erksa each scored goals. Kelly scored three times for his eighth career hat trick and Erksa found the back of the net twice. Creter scored a goal off a faceoff win early in the third quarter for his first career goal. Creter and Shea Keethler combined to win 13 of 20 faceoffs.
The Terps took an 11-2 lead into the fourth quarter, but they scored just once in the final frame while allowing five goals. Aidan O’Neil scored four goals to lead the Spiders, who have lost all five meetings against Maryland since 2019.
Maryland will next play at Loyola Maryland on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
