The driver of a fleeing pickup surrendered to California Highway Patrol officers after sustaining significant damage to the vehicle on the 5 Freeway Thursday afternoon.
The CHP took over the pursuit from the Bakersfield Police Department at about 2 p.m., and by the time Sky5 arrived at about 2:15 p.m., the white pickup’s front right tire had been destroyed and it was riding on a damaged rim.
The truck, however, continued to speed south on the 5 Freeway at up to 60 mph, even as the driver struggled to remain inside a lane and pieces of the vehicle flew off.
At about 2:20 p.m., the pickup slowed near a center divider and gradually came to a stop. The driver, a man, emerged from the vehicle with his hands up and he was taken into custody.
