(NewsNation) — The Justice Department is reportedly considering dropping its corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Senior officials under President Donald Trump have reportedly held discussions with federal prosecutors about the possibility and have spoken to Adams’s defense team.
Adams was indicted in September on charges that included bribery, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign contributions. He has pleaded not guilty and said he is being prosecuted because he criticized the Biden administration.
A Democrat, Adams has met with Trump and attended the inauguration. He has also said that going forward, he will share criticisms of the president in private.
In December, Trump suggested he might pardon Adams, who he said has been treated unfairly by prosecutors.
Earlier in January, prosecutors wrote in a filing that they had continued to uncover criminal conduct by Adams and indicated new charges could be coming.
Since Trump took office, federal prosecutors have halted several cases, including the case of a Republican lawmaker facing campaign finance charges and a case against a Texas surgeon accused of obtaining private medical information about gender-affirming care for minors.
