Contrary to some people’s beliefs, Legally Blonde is not, in fact, a documentary about the actress Reese Witherspoon.
The Hello Sunshine founder appeared in a recent episode of The Graham Norton Show — joined on the sofa by Ariana Grande, Will Ferrell and Don Gilet — recalling a hilarious instance of being picked for jury duty where her fellow deliberators weren’t able to separate fact from fiction.
“Listen, I did not want to do jury duty,” the Big Little Lies star admitted. “But I remember it was probably seven years after Legally Blonde, I got called for jury duty and it was in Beverly Hills, and I thought, ‘Surely they’re not gonna pick me.’ They picked me for a long trial, y’all. It was like, probably two weeks.”
When Ferrell chimed in that the duration wasn’t “that long,” The Morning Show actress defended, “No listen, it was two solid weeks, every day going in.” The case concerned a dog bite, which Witherspoon noted was “very clear” and which she quickly grew “very invested in.”
After going into deliberation, the group was set to appoint a foreperson, “and they all unanimously were like, ‘her,’” the producer recounted, pointing at herself. “They were like, ‘You went to law school.’”
And though it is clear that the multi-hyphenate shares some traits with the hard-working, fashionable Elle Woods, being a Harvard Law grad is not among them: “I was like, ‘Y’all this is really upsetting. I definitely did not go to law school, I didn’t finish college.’ I played a lawyer in a movie once, but they fully made me the foreman and I started realizing … people don’t know much about the law.”
Though she’s no Erin Brockovich, Witherspoon urged people to go to jury duty if called because “some bad stuff goes down in there. [The jury members] were like, ‘I think she’s guilty ’cause I don’t like the way she looked.’ And that was very troubling. I was like, ‘You can’t say that. We don’t have enough evidence!’”
Well, she certainly showed them how valuable Witherspoon can be!
