MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A fire broke out at a Wheaton townhouse Sunday night, leaving one family displaced.
In a post on X at 9:14 p.m., Pete Piringer with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) said crews were responding to a fire in the bedroom of a two-story townhouse in the 10800 block of Bucknell Drive.
At the scene, responders found heavy flames coming from the home’s second floor. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported.
Piringer noted that a smoke alarm in the home alerted the three occupants to the fire, and they escaped with their dog. Fire officials said the fire was caused by a space heater that ignited after it was placed too close to a bed.
According to Piringer, this is the second time in 24 hours that a smoke alarm has successfully alerted residents in the area to a fire.
