WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — DC Fire and EMS said a woman has died after an apartment fire in Northwest D.C. on Saturday morning.
Crews said they were dispatched to the 1800 block of Newton St. for a fire on the first floor of a three-story building.
Firefighters rescued a person, who had critical life-threatening injuries, from the apartment where the fire started and another person from the second floor.
First responders said the fire was under control.
DC Fire and EMS said the person rescued from the apartment, a woman, died as a result of her injuries, adding that their “thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.”
The D.C. Department of Buildings deemed the building to be uninhabitable.
The cause of the fire is still not known and remains under investigation.
The Red Cross of the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region is assisting the five people displaced.
