Officials with the Riverside Police Department have launched an investigation after video surfaced of one of their officers reportedly destroying a person’s property while they were not home.
In the somewhat bizarre footage, which has racked up nearly 300,000 views on LackLuster, a YouTube channel with some 1.3 million subscribers, about a half dozen officers are seen walking into what appears to be a driveway or patio area of a residence.
According to the video’s narrator, the home belonged to the girlfriend of the man that police were looking to speak to, though, allegedly, no one was home at the time the officers arrived.
After police knock on the door, only to hear a dog barking, several of the officers linger in the driveway area, where two motorcycles and a scooter, along with a nearby vehicle, are seen.
Moments later, one of the officers grabs a skateboard that had been leaning on what looks like a stack of lumber, and gets on it, testing it out, when someone is heard saying, “Do an ollie.”
An “ollie” is a skateboarding trick where the rider stomps the tail of the board to make a jump.
The officer makes several unsuccessful attempts as the others continue standing around the property.
Eventually, all but two officers leave the area, with the camera capturing one of the remaining officers picking up a hammer as both walked over to the skateboard.
The officer with the hammer stomps on the top of the skateboard before it breaks in half and walks aways while the other appears to take a photo of the broken board.
In a message to the community posted on the Riverside Police Department’s Facebook page, officials said they wanted to address concerns raised by the video.
“Our department takes this matter seriously and Chief Gonzalez has initiated a thorough internal investigation to determine the facts,” the message read. “We hold our officers to the highest standards and remain committed to maintaining your trust through accountability and professionalism.”
The exact reason officers were there to speak to someone is unknown at this time.
