The Baltimore Sun is producing a weekly notebook of Baltimore County Public Schools competing in high school wrestling and indoor track and field and naming an Athlete of the Week in each sport.
Here’s what’s been going on around the county:
Mat matters
Pointers lead the way at Tomahawk Duals: Sparrows Point finished second over the weekend at the Tomahawk Duals hosted by Havre de Grace. After going 2-3 in round robin competition, the Pointers won a pigtail match against Loch Raven to advance to the championship quarterfinals. They topped Col. Zadok Magruder, 45-34, then won a thrilling semifinal against Perry Hall, 41-40.
Against the Gators, the dual started at 150 pounds and Perry Hall took six of the first seven bouts to lead 34-6. Sparrows Point’s only win came from Russell Fary with a pin at 157. Sparrows Point, though, claimed a string of forfeit victories and in the final contested match at 138, Ryan Whisner scored a 17-2 technical fall over Sean McGarry.
North Caroline won the other side of the championship bracket and had already beaten the Pointers in the tournament, 40-39 on criteria.
Perry Hall finished 3-5 at the event with wins over Towson, North East and Edgewood. Victor Marks-Jenkins went unbeaten, 7-0 in contested bouts with six pins. Clayton Hosier went 7-1 for the Gators with five pinfall wins and two technical fall wins. His only loss came in a sudden victory decision.
Mavericks succeed at Falcon Invitational: Eastern Tech finished as runner-up, narrowly behind host Winters Mill this week at the Falcon Girls Invitational. The Mavericks were powered by two weight class champions and three runners-up.
Ariana Carnahan improved her unblemished season record to 17-0 by winning the 110-pound weight class. Morgan Linton also got to 17-0 by winning at 170. The Mavericks got second-place finishes from Mya Mullineaux (100 pounds), Ryleigh McCreer (145) and Arianna King (190).
Hereford was the only other county school competing. The Bulls’ top finisher was Sophia Garbarino (235), who finished third.
In the coed tournament, Hereford finished seventh as a team and Eastern Tech 12th. Hereford’s Connor Cline (19-3), won five matches to take the 106-pound title. Cline won his first two matches by pin, his quarterfinal and semifinal by decision, then pinned Frederick’s Amir Bakari in the finals. The Mavericks’ Chase Ullmann (10-1) won six matches — two by pin, four by tech fall — to win 132 pounds.
On track
Franklin edges out Hereford, New Town: At a 12-school county meet Wednesday, the first and third place boys teams finished within six points of each other. Franklin bested the competition, winning with 79 points. Hereford was second with 76, following by New Town with 73.
Franklin racked up points in the 500 meters, with Sean Trader winning in 1 minute, 12.29 seconds. His teammate Victor Olawepo was right behind him in second and Turon Stansberry finished sixth. The Indians also won the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. They got a further point boost from Olawepo finishing second in the 55, Yoshi Fukui finishing second in the 800 and Norman Cole taking second in the shot put.
Hereford cruised to a win in the girls standings, finishing with 157 points. Randallstown (86) was the only other team scoring above 40. The Bulls got individual wins from Sylvia Snider in the 500, Charlie Brill in the 1,600, Kylie Jacobson in the 3,200, Eliza Fox in the high jump and Maddie Drylie in the pole vault.
Randallstown’s best effort was a 1-2-3 sweep in the 300. Danielle Perez won in 42.89. She was followed by teammates Niyona Watson and Taylor Garrett.
Make-up meet: Franklin’s boys again took first place two days later in a 10-team county make-up meet. Franklin totaled 91 points to beat out Milford Mill (83) and Parkville (77.5). The Indians triumphed despite their only event win coming from the team of Xavier Gardner, Joshua Dutton, Malachi Carter and Zane Wehye in the 4×800.
Perry Hall won the girls meet with 76 points, beating out Lansdowne (65) and Franklin (59). The Gators’ Mia Yablonski won the 3,200 and Za’nyi Robinson won the high jump.
Woodlawn’s Kenya Merritt was the only double winner, finishing first in the 300 and 500.

Athletes of the Week
Boys wrestling
Russell Fary, Sparrows Point: Fary led Sparrows Point’s efforts at the Tomahawk Duals. He went 8-0 with six pins and two technical falls. Fary is ranked fourth in Maryland at 157 pounds and second among public school wrestlers. He went 38-0 and won the Class 2A/1A 150-pound state championship last season.
Girls wrestling
Ariana Carnahan, Eastern Tech: Carnahan is now 17-0 on the season after dominating the 110-pound weight class at the Falcons Girls Invitational. She won all four of her matches by pin. Carnahan is ranked second in Maryland at 110 by Legacy Wrestling. In her semifinal, she pinned Patterson Mill’s Sarah Alkhatib (12-4, ranked No. 11) and in the finals pinned Poolesville’s Alina Fang (12-2, ranked No. 8 at 115).
Boys indoor track and field
Theodore Brown, Towson: Last Saturday at the Montgomery Invitational, Brown set a school record, winning the 3,200 in 9:32.39. It was the fourth fastest time in Maryland this season and 26th in the country according to athletic.net. He added a victory in the 3,200 at a county meet last Monday.
Girls indoor track and field
Kimani Dennis, Dulaney: Dennis hasn’t finished below second in the shot put in any meet she’s competed in this season. She took second at the Montgomery Invitational last weekend and won the event at a county meet last Monday, throwing 34 feet, 3 inches. Her best throw this season is 34-6 1/2.
