WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said three officers were injured in a shooting in Northeast D.C. on Monday morning.
Police said that at about 4:30 a.m., they responded to the report of a man with a gun who fired shots inside the lobby of an apartment in the 300 block of Florida Avenue.
When officers arrived, they made contact with the suspect who soon after ran into an elevator.
Additional officers responded to the scene to look for the suspect.
A few minutes later, the suspect came out of the elevator and encountered the officers in the lobby.
When police attempted to take the suspect into custody, he pulled out a gun and shot at the officers.
The officers shot back, hitting the suspect.
The suspect died at the scene, despite life-saving attempts.
Three officers also sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital conscious and breathing.
“Thankfully, all of our officers are in stable condition. They’re talking and we’re so grateful that they survived this unfortunate incident,” said D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith.
The officers have been placed on administrative leave.
This incident will be independently reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
“This is yet another reminder of the daily dangers we face everyday in our city and across the U.S. I’m very grateful that our officers were able to get through this particular incident without any further injuries,” said Smith.
