WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — World Central Kitchen (WCK) has been on the ground in Southern California, providing meals for residents who have lost their homes and for first responders on the frontlines as wildfires rage in the region.
The D.C.-based organization has been posting updates on their X, sharing images of some of the residents in Southern California that they’ve been able to help by providing meals and water.
The organization has also shared other posts on how they have been able to provide warm meals to first responders as they continue to risk their lives while fighting the ongoing fires.
“These men and women, the firefighters, they are the best of the best, man,” said Chef Jose Andres, the founder of WCK, in a social media post.
He and his team also deserve credit for easing people’s pain.
“We knew that we needed to get there, and we needed to act fast,” said Wendy Escobedo, the organization’s response director for this operation.
She and others are based in Los Angeles.
“Got food trucks going and we just started, started making things happen,” Escobedo said. “So, you know, people were out there with sandwiches, with fresh fruit, with water for people.”
Food trucks are set up around the region, providing meals to anyone who needs one.
WCK staff work around the clock. It’s long hours, but very rewarding.
“Everybody just being together and showing up for the community has been really incredible to see,” Escobedo said. “The beauty of the work that we do is that even though some of us are not from here, we become part of this community really quickly.”
WCK said it will provide meals to first responders and fire victims until further notice.
