(NewsNation) — Two stabbings unfolded just minutes apart at two different subway stations in New York City on New Year’s Day morning, leaving two hospitalized, police reported.
Before 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day, the stabbings occurred on opposite sides of the city. The victims are in stable condition in the hospital.
The attacks are part of a recent series of unrelated violent incidents occurring on or near subways.
On New Year’s Eve, a man was pushed onto the tracks as a train was approaching, leaving him in critical condition.
Days before Christmas, a man intentionally set a woman on fire while she slept on a train. The severity of these recent subway attacks has made riders, including tourists and residents, more fearful of the nation’s largest transit system.
But city officials are quick to point to data that shows the overall number of reported crimes on the subway system is the lowest year-to-date since 2010, exempting the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.
There were 10 murders in 2024, which ties for a record 25-year high in 2022. The more violent attacks have typically occurred during peak hours and in nonviolent areas of the transit system.
