(NewsNation) — Improvided explosive devices, or IEDs, were among the weapons found in the vehicle of the suspect in the attack that killed 15 people and injured 30 others in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.
IEDs are “homemade bomb(s) and/or destructive devices to destroy, incapacitate, harass or distract,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Examples include small pipe bombs which can be made to be more sophisticated in order to cause a lot of damage and loss of life.
Other attacks that used IEDs include the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, the Olympic Park bombing in 1996 and the London bombings in 2005.
Police suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar as the person responsible for what the FBI has deemed a “terrorist attack” after allegedly driving his vehicle into a crowd on the tourist-heavy Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning.
Law enforcement is still searching the area for improvised explosive devices, according to the FBI. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter.
