WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A 5K race is kicking off in the District on New Year’s Day, bringing holiday cheer and road closures.
The 11th annual FitDC Fresh Start 5K will commence at 11 a.m. at Anacostia Park. The free, family-friendly event is open to people of all abilities and ages. A pre-race festival and a “Kids Dash” will take place before the 5K with music, refreshments and vendor booths, according to the mayor’s office.
“Every new year brings an opportunity for a fresh start, and the Fresh Start 5K has become a proud DC tradition that inspires all of us to prioritize health, wellness, and community,” said Mayor Bowser in a press release. “On January 1, 2025, let’s come together to celebrate new beginnings, set positive intentions, and start the year strong—one step at a time. See you at the starting line!”
D.C. police are implementing parking restrictions and road closures to accommodate the fun.
According to police, on New Year’s Day from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m., the following streets will be deemed as Emergency No Parking and will be closed to vehicle traffic:
- Marion Barry Avenue from Martin Luther King Jr Avenue to Anacostia Drive, SE
- Nicholson Street, SE, at the park entrance
The police department noted that all street closures are subject to change, and drivers should expect parking restrictions along the street in the race’s vicinity.
