SPRINGFIELD, Va. (DC News Now) — The wintry mix coming Tuesday morning could mean some tough travel conditions for people headed out for the holidays.
Across the DMV on Monday evening, crews had already begun pretreating roads to prevent potential patches of ice.
AAA is expecting 119.3 million people will travel 50 miles or more until New Year’s Day.
“Hoping it’s not bad. They’re calling for a potential chance of ice, snow but hopefully we’ll get snow by the time we’re going to White Tail to go skiing for the day,” said Scott Kaplan.
Millions of people are crisscrossing the country for the holidays.
“We’re coming to Springfield, Va. here to visit family,” said Melissa Hunter.
From Dec. 21 through New Year’s Day, AAA says 107 million people will be driving.
Hunter, who is from Colorado, is one of them.
“We hit some snow in Pennsylvania. But the roads were pretty well cleared off. So. Yeah, it’s been a good drive,” Hunter said.
AAA said if you’re hitting the road on Tuesday or Wednesday, minimal traffic impact is expected, but that could change with bad weather.
“Let’s just hope it’s not bad on the roads for the most part tomorrow morning because I don’t want to get stuck in traffic for hours,” Kaplan said.
In Northern Virginia, VDOT said crews have been pretreating roads but officials are asking drivers to delay travel Tuesday morning if possible.
