BOWIE, Md. (DC News Now) — DC News Now is hearing about new apparent drone sightings in the D.C. area, from Maryland to Northern Virginia. Still, no one knows what these drones are or where they are coming from.
Among the questions is whether they are connected to the recent surge of drone activity reportedly seen in New Jersey.
While that is unclear, those who have seen — and captured — drone video are certain of what they are seeing.
“It looks like a big drone,” Theodore Feddeler said during a video he recorded in Annapolis, Maryland. “A giant drone,” his wife responded.
Feddeler said he saw the drone Thursday night and posted it online.
“You know I’m not really sure [what it is],” he said. “Everybody’s kind of been silent on it.”
That’s a similar sentiment shared by former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday where he described seeing dozens of apparent drones near his residence in Davidsonville.
“I do not know if this increasing activity over our skies is a threat to public safety or national security,” he wrote. “But the public is growing increasingly concerned and frustrated with the complete lack of transparency and the dismissive attitude of the federal government.”
The White House said there is no national security threat.
Hogan is demanding the federal government address the issue.
“The government has the ability to track these from their point of origin but has mounted a negligent response. People are rightfully clamoring for answers, but aren’t getting any,” he wrote.
Additional videos have been shared with DC News Now from Bowie, Maryland and on I-66 near Fauquier County, Virginia.
Several local law enforcement agencies have reported getting calls about drone activity, including Stafford County, Virginia and Loudoun County, Virginia.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reminded people to only report drones if they are flying in a restricted area, near critical infrastructure like an airport, or if it’s surveilling private property.
“It’s a pretty sizable object that’s flying through the sky. And, we were just kind of in awe about it,” Feddeler said. “You’re asking what I think it was. I can’t tell you. I don’t think anybody can at this point. I think it’s a little unsettling.”
