Jay-Z, the legendary rapper whose real name is Shawn Carter, was accused in a lawsuit of raping a 13-year-old girl over two decades ago at a post-VMAs party alongside the disgraced music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The suit was one of a number brought by Texas attorney Tony Buzbee on behalf of victims of Diddy, who is also facing federal charges for sex trafficking and racketeering.
Diddy has previously denied all accusations against him.
“The pleading speaks for itself,” Buzbee said in a statement to the Daily Beast. “This is a very serious matter that will be litigated in court.”
In the suit, which was first filed in October, an unnamed woman accused Combs and now Carter of drugging and raping her at an afterparty for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
News of the amended civil complaint was first reported by NBC News Sunday night.
In a lengthy statement sent to the Daily Beast, Jay-Z lashed out at Buzbee, calling a demand letter he previously sent to the rapper a “blackmail attempt.”
“What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle,” an irate Carter said in the statement. “No sir, it had the opposite effect! It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion. So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!”
Carter expressed support for what he called the “true victims in the world,” as well as his own children. The 55-year-old rapper has three children with his wife, pop star Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
“My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” Carter wrote. “I mourn yet another loss of innocence.”
