President-elect Trump heavily criticized Syrian rebels for their move to overtake the city of Damascus on Saturday, but emphasized that this was not America’s fight.
“Russia, because they are so tied up in Ukraine, and with the loss there of over 600,000 soldiers, seems incapable of stopping this literal march through Syria, a country they have protected for years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, also claiming former President Obama did not help the country enough during his administration.
“There was never much of a benefit in Syria for Russia, other than to make Obama look really stupid,” Trump added in the post.
The U.S. Embassy in Syria pressed Americans to leave the war torn region on Friday. For months Russia and Iran have backed the nation’s government in a fight against opposition forces.
““In any event, Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!” Trump wrote on Saturday morning.
Rebels’ objective is to force Syrian President Bashar Assad out of office. Recent resistance efforts have been led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a U.S.-designated terrorist group.
They successfully captured the city of Aleppo causing flights out of the international airport to cease spurring a global response.
The U.S. has largely remained absent from the region except for 900 troops stationed in the northeast territory on a mission to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.
