Speaker Mike Johnson is hosting the annual Capitol Tree Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday afternoon — marking the 60th anniversary of the event.
“Spruce Wayne” is an 80-foot-tall Sitka Spruce tree from the Tongass National Rainforest in Southeast Alaska. The Architect of the Capitol, which selects the tree each year, recently shared that the spruce’s journey to D.C. took more than 700 miles by sea and over 4,000 land miles by truck.
It will be lit from dusk until 11 p.m. local time each day through Jan. 1.
The ceremony, held on the West Front Lawn of the Capitol, is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. EST.
