WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A motorcyclist died after they struck a police cruiser in Northwest D.C. early Saturday morning, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Police said that at about 4:20 a.m., an unmarked MPD cruiser was driving west on Columbia Road when it arrived at the intersection of 13th Street.
As the cruiser traveled through the intersection, a “motorized cycle” driving at a high speed struck its side, according to an MPD spokesperson. MPD noted that the officer had a green light and was not responding to a call when the crash occurred.
The officer gave the motorcyclist first aid and called the D.C. Fire and EMS Department (DCFD). Despite lifesaving measures, they died there.
Per policy, the police department placed the MPD member on administrative leave.
Police said the crash was not recorded by body camera. However, authorities are reviewing nearby surveillance footage.
