MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. (DC News Now) — The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) said it will honor Rosa Parks by placing special interior bus cards inside 400 Ride On Buses throughout December.
A designated seat in each bus will also pay tribute to Parks and her historic act of courage.
On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks committed an act of bravery by refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama.
Parks lost her job and experienced harassment but became a leader in the fight to end racial segregation.
What she did inspired the local Black community, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
The boycott started on Dec. 1 and lasted over a year.
During this year, the Black community experienced a lot of difficulties, especially because many depended on buses to get to around
The boycott came to an end when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional.
Park’s role highlighted racism in the public transit system and ignited change.
What Park did highlighted the importance of transportation equity and how it is a right for everyone, no matter the color oft their skin.
