WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Just days before Thanksgiving, airports are already seeing the holiday rush. This Thanksgiving travel period is expected to be one of those most busiest on record, and many are trying to beat the rush at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) estimates more than 18 million people will be traveling this Thanksgiving, and they said they’re prepared. This is a 6% increase compared to 2023.
“It’s a lot busier than it was a few years ago, but it’s still a little bit easy,” said Lexi Sehildknechd.
While many are looking forward to spending time with loved ones, others are excited about something else.
“Not having school,” said Zoey and her mother Crystal Miller.
Although Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday are expected to be the busiest travel days, the airport was packed with travelers. On Monday morning, several passengers at Reagan National were on the way to board their flights ahead of the holiday.
“I know Orlando is really bad for the lines right now, so I’m a little concerned,” said Sehildknechd.
Many flyers were trying to get ahead of the long lines including passenger Tom Sherman.
“That’s why I’m here at 6 in the morning to get up to Boston early,” said Sherman.
“[I left today so] we can get out today and hopefully beat the rush and save some money,” said passenger Crystal Miller.
Officials are encouraging everyone to leave at a decent time and have patience.
