Oscar-nominated actor Andra Day has been tapped to play Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Annabeth’s mom, in the upcoming second season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The casting was reveiled at D23 in Brazil with a video of Day in character posted across the show’s social media accounts. (You can watch it below).
Day is joining new recurring cast Tamara Smart as Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus, and Daniel Diemer as Percy’s half brother Tyson, as well as returning series regulars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell, and Dior Goodjohn.
The second installment will follow Percy Jackson (Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Jeffries) and Grover Underwood (Simhadri) as they embark on a new adventure based on The Sea of Monsters, the second book of Rick Riordan’s best-selling “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series, published by Disney Hyperion. Production on Season 2 just began in Vancouver in August.
In the new season, Percy Jackson returns to Camp Half-Blood one year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon.
Day earned a Lead Actress Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for The United States Of Billie Holiday.
