Firefighting crews were still monitoring hot spots Monday morning after uncontrolled range fires at the Aberdeen Proving Ground released smoke into the Route 40 corridor in Harford County.
Units from the military installation and the Maryland National Guard were on site in the testing area as smoke was still visible from around the site.
The installation said Monday that there was no threat to surrounding communities, and the smoke “should dissipate as the day goes on.”
The U.S. Army weaponry testing site’s own fire and emergency services department first reported the brush fires Sunday afternoon, and at one point, they encompassed more than 100 acres of land.
The blazes came amid drought-like conditions throughout Maryland, where the state’s Department of Natural Resources had issued a burn ban last week.
A Code Orange air quality alert for fine particulates for much of the Baltimore area is in effect Monday until noon.
