WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – In the race for the White House the current president is making waves.
With just days to go until the election, President Joe Biden made a comment that is forcing both candidates to respond.
It started with a joke that a comedian told at a Trump rally over the weekend, calling Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage.
Tuesday night President Biden criticized that remark.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable,” said Biden.
The White House later tried to clarify the president was talking about the rhetoric, not Trump’s supporters themselves, but Wednesday former president Donald Trump seized on the comment.
“We know it’s what they believe because look how they’ve treated you. They’ve treated you like garbage, frankly,” said Trump.
He also went after his opponent.
“Without question my supporters are far higher quality than crooked Joe Biden and lyin’ Kamala,” said Trump.
Vice President Kamala Harris distanced herself from the controversy.
“I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” said Harris.
She tried to elevate a message of unity.
“The work that I do is about representing all the people, whether they support me or not,” said Harris.
Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt says Harris’s attacks on the former president are divisive and argues it’s their side fighting to bring people together.
“Success is going to be the greatest unifier for this county and he’s going to bring success back,” said Leavitt.
At separate North Carolina rallies each candidate made the case that they’ll best represent Americans.
“Six days from now we can turn the page forever on this failed and corrupt administration,” said Trump.
Both candidates will be holding rallies in Wisconsin Wednesday night.
