(The Hill) — Leonardo DiCaprio says he’s voting for Vice President Harris in the White House race because “we need a bold step forward to save our economy, our planet and ourselves,” while former President Trump “continues to deny the facts” when it comes to climate change.
The “Don’t Look Up” star, a longtime environmental activist, released a video on Instagram on Friday announcing his endorsement of Harris.
Citing Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which DiCaprio described as “unnatural disasters” that “were caused by climate change,” the performer denounced the ex-commander-in-chief.
“Donald Trump continues to deny the facts. He continues to deny the science,” the Academy Award winner said.
“He withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Accords and rolled back critical environmental protections,” DiCaprio, 49, said.
As president, Trump began the lengthy process of withdrawing from the global climate change agreement signed by every other country in the world in 2019.
“Now he’s promised the oil and gas industry that he’ll get rid of any regulation they want in exchange for a billion-dollar donation,” DiCaprio said.
During a meeting earlier this year with oil executives, Trump asked oil industry executives for $1 billion in campaign cash, according to someone with knowledge of the meeting, The Hill reported in May.
“Climate change is killing the earth and ruining our economy,” DiCaprio said.
“She helped lead the most significant climate action in U.S. history, including passing the Inflation Reduction Act,” he added of Harris and the 2022 sweeping health and climate bill.
“Under her leadership, we set ambitious targets for achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and building a green economy that not only creates jobs, but also helps save our planet,” DiCaprio said.
Urging voters to join him in casting a ballot for Harris, DiCaprio said, “We cannot afford to go backwards.”
