One of the most captivating things to see is young children taking their first steps.
We can be in a store, just passing by, or in a serious conversation when a toddler stumbles past waving both arms to stay balanced. It doesn’t matter if we know the child or know where the toddler is going. It seems to be innate within us to stop what we are doing and root for that kid.
Sometimes the children have a goal, but mostly they just start out and go wherever their decision leads them. They often make their own trail.
We are all equipped with the innate ability to make choices. We can learn to live life on our own terms and in our own way even if we make a wrong turn or take a different path than expected.
In his book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Dr. Seuss tells us, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”
Whether we are young in age or young at heart, new experiences await us. So, let’s look at what toddlers can teach us about life, knowing first they teach us that life’s inevitable changes are not something to fear but rather opportunities to adapt, grow and thrive.
Start now. You don’t have to feel like you have everything figured out. Don’t worry about the end, just take the next right step. Try not to hurt yourself or others.
Trust yourself. Whatever has set this path before you, trust yourself. Put one foot in front of the other even if you wobble. Just set off with good intentions. After all, you have made it this far.
Seek balance. Give yourself some grace and flexibility in your journey. It’s OK to change your mind or try something new. Find the balance between adventure and steadiness.
Root for yourself. Remember that toddler? Encourage yourself. Make your words be kind. Congratulate yourself on every big step you take. Life is good when you are good to yourself and others.
At the end of the day, every step can have meaning. Whether it’s a small decision or a big one. If we focus on what brings us a sense of satisfaction, serenity and purpose, we can start now and know that because we’ve lived a full life we have the wisdom to navigate whatever comes next, one wobbly step at a time.
