An eight-year-old boy has died after being shot in the face in a suspected accidental discharge on a farm in Cumbria.
Police said they were called to the remote farm in the village of Warcop shortly before 3pm on Saturday.
The boy was flown to hospital by air ambulance having suffered a gunshot wound to his head and face.
Cumbria police said the child died overnight from his injuries.
A man in his 60s was arrested at the scene in Warcop, nearly 20 miles south-east of Penrith, on suspicion of assault.
He remains in custody but was now under arrest on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, police said.
It is understood that detectives believe the child was the victim of an accidental discharge.
A Cumbria police spokesperson said the firearm “was secured at the scene” and an investigation was under way.
