Here’s a roundup of state college football games played on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Division I
Stony Brook 22, Morgan State 3: The visiting Bears (2-3) took an early lead before the Seawolves (4-1) responded with four scoring drives to pull away. Beckett Leary (Reservoir) made a 25-yard field goal to give Morgan State a 3-0 lead with 1:16 left in the first quarter. Roland Dempster scored two of his three touchdown runs in the second quarter and Stony Brook never trailed again. Myles Miree rushed for 75 yards on 11 carries, Duce Taylor finished 11-for-17 for 70 yards and Dominique Anthony was 5-for-5 for 43 yards for the Bears, who rushed for 177 yards but lost two fumbles. Morgan State hosts Division II Lincoln University (Pa.) on homecoming next Saturday.
Division II
Frostburg State 25, Mercyhurst 24: The host Lakers (1-4) pulled within one with 10 minutes left after a 35-yard touchdown pass, but the ensuring 2-point conversion attempt failed and the Bobcats (4-0) hung on to win. Frostburg State led for most of the game but fell behind, 18-17, with 9:30 left in the third quarter. They took the lead for good 6:20 later on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Myles Fulton (Old Mill) to Jeremiah Gibson. Frostburg State will host West Virginia Wesleyan next Saturday.
Winston-Salem State 28, Bowie State 14: The visiting Bulldogs (1-3, 1-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) took an early lead before the Rams (4-1, 2-0) answered with a 28-0 run. Sam Doku capped a 10-play, 56-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown and Bowie State took a 7-0 lead with 5:56 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs didn’t score again until the final minute of the game when Kevin Taylor completed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Carlos Smith. Bowie State travels to Fayetteville State next Saturday.
Division III
Stevenson 34, Alvernia 20: The host Mustangs (2-2, 2-1 Middle Atlantic Commonwealth Conference) took a 21-0 lead in the first half and beat the Golden Wolves (0-4, 0-3). Stevenson was led by Jordan Adams (12-for-22 for 181 yards), who threw touchdown passes to Dillon Johnson and Deion Richardson (Harford Community College). Edward Emmens, Kirk Reed and LJ Blackwell each had a rushing touchdown for the Mustangs. Stevenson will travel to Widener on Oct. 12.
