If Armstrong Williams is correct that the U.S. is becoming more progressive (“America is tilting to the left,” Sept 15), I say it’s about time. Healthy majorities want sensible laws to reduce gun violence, stronger measures to mitigate climate change and a return to a time when the government didn’t exercise control over a woman’s body.
Historian Arthur Schlesinger wrote the American political history cycles between periods of private interest versus public purpose. The former has been preeminent in recent years with tax cuts for corporations and billionaires and U.S. Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United v. FEC and Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc.
I’m ready for New Deal and Great Society-like policies that seek to improve the life, liberty and happiness of everyday Americans. Bring on a time when the general welfare of all of us has priority.
