Katie Couric was among the first celebrities to remember the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the 23rd anniversary Wednesday.
The 67-year-old renowned journalist — who became a grandmother this year — shared a clip of her 9/11 news coverage alongside disgraced former co-anchor Matt Lauer on Instagram.
Engaging her nearly two million followers, she wrote a reflective caption, ‘The day the sky was a bright, cerulean blue. The day 2,977 souls perished. The day dreams were extinguished. The day medical professionals mobilized and waited in hospitals across the city but no one came.’
The note continued: ‘The day New Yorkers walked around in a daze and the nation, in fact the world, was in a state of shock. The day the nightmare began for so many families. The day we as a country became united in the face of unspeakable evil. The day I will never forget.’
Kelly Ripa and Mark Wahlberg also used their Instagram platforms to recognize the tragic day in history.

For her part, 53-year-old Kelly took to Instagram Stories to share a nighttime image of a spotlight shining in the New York City skyline, where the twin towers used to stand and wrote, ‘#neverforget.’
And Mark, also 53, uploaded an image of the 9/11 memorial and wrote, ‘We will never forget.’
Kris Jenner, 68, also used social media to highlight the anniversary as the mother-of-six reposted a tribute reel from Instagram account The NYC Walking Show.
Underneath the clip, she wrote, ‘Today we honor those who lost their lives 23 years ago and remember the heroes who responded that day.’
The entertainment mogul continued, ‘We will never forget, and our hearts are with the families whose lives were forever changed.’
Journalist Maria Shriver also joined the Hollywood camp of those remembering the tragedy.
The longtime media personality posted her news segment from 2001, in which she covered the awful news on NBC in Los Angeles.
In her caption — which was identical to the one she posted last year — she said, ‘On this day, I always like to look back on this interview with Deena Burnett (now Bailey) and her family for @datelinenbc about the heroic actions of her husband, Tom Burnett, one of the men that tried to stop the terrorists on United 93.’

She added, ‘I again spoke with Deena in 2016 for @thesundaypaper, where she reminded me, “It’s great to remember, but better to honor. Honor comes from living a life worthy of the sacrifice.” Let’s carry this advice with us today and everyday as we honor those we lost.’
Engaging her 1.5 million followers, Shriver went on to add: ‘Today marks one of the most somber, painful days in our nation’s history. It’s especially painful for all those families who lost someone they loved. They’ve had to live without.
‘May we think of them today. May we all hold space for them. Be gentle with everyone today, as we don’t know how this day triggers our neighbors.’
She thoughtfully wrapped up the post, ‘And may we continue to be thankful to all the first responders, who rushed in to save their fellow citizens. They didn’t care who they were. They simply cared. They put their lives on the line. Thank you to them, and their families. #911neverforget.’
