WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said the man who was wanted for dropping a gun in a storm drain that later went off and killed Investigator Wayne David was arrested.
Police told DC News Now that 27-year-old Tyrell Lamonte Bailey was taken into custody around 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 4.
Bailey was wanted on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm.
Around 5:40 p.m. on Aug. 28, DC police officers with the Robbery Suppression Unit were canvassing the 4500 block of Quarles Street Northeast, when they saw Bailey exit a suspicious car.
Officers attempted to make contact with Bailey, but he took off and started running toward Interstate 295 South. Police said Bailey jumped down from a retaining wall and officers saw him drop a gun in a storm drain before he jumped on the back of a motorcycle.
During the course of the investigation, Officer David went to recover the gun from the drain. That’s when it accidentally went off and hit him. He was taken to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he died.
For several days, D.C. police worked to locate Bailey, and rewards for information leading to his arrest reached up to $60,000.
The details surrounding Bailey’s arrest are still limited.
This is a developing story.
