Former U.S. soccer star Hope Solo and her husband, ex-NFL player Jerramy Stevens, have made headlines throughout their 10-plus-year marriage.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist and Stevens first met as student-athletes at the University of Washington and later wed in 2012 — just one day after Stevens was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Solo.
In the years since, Stevens and Solo have welcomed two children, and stuck by each other’s side throughout legal troubles, Solo’s forced retirement in 2016 and the goalkeeper’s time spent in in-patient alcohol treatment in 2022.
Most recently, in 2023, Stevens supported Solo as she was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Now, Solo’s soccer success, turbulent personal life and public challenges are the subject of Netflix’s Untold: Hope Solo vs. U.S. Soccer, which began streaming on Sept. 3.
So who is Hope Solo’s husband? From his NFL career to his relationship with his wife, here’s everything to know about Jerramy Stevens.
Stevens was born in Idaho in 1979
Stevens was born to Bob and Fran Stevens in 1979 in Boise, Idaho, and grew up in Lacey, Washington. He attended River Ridge High School and was a letterman in football, basketball and track.
He played in the NFL
Stevens played football at the University of Washington and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks as their first-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. He stayed with the team until 2007 when he moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He played in Super Bowl XL in 2006, which the Seahawks lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a year after he became a regular starter at tight end for the team.
They first met at college
Both Stevens and Solo attended the University of Washington, overlapping between 1999 and 2001. They first met while at the school, and dated for a while in the 2000s before going a year without speaking in 2011.
Solo told Elle in 2019 that Stevens had confessed his love for her while out to dinner that year. “I didn’t know what to say,” she explained. “So I said, ‘F— you,’ and we didn’t talk for a year.”
Stevens and Solo got married in November 2012
A year after the dinner where Stevens and Solo stopped talking, the pair reconciled. They dated for two months and then got married on Nov. 13, 2012.
However, their wedding wasn’t without controversy as one day before the nuptials, Stevens was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Solo, however, there was not enough evidence to charge him. According to court documents Stevens and Solo were arguing about about whether to get married in Florida or Washington state.
In January 2013, Solo said in a news conference, “It’s been a crazy year, as always — the story of my life — but it’s been a great year. Right now, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my personal life. I’m happily married. Yeah, there’s lots of ups and downs, but that’s what makes us strong is getting through them all.”
He’s supported Solo through controversy
Aside from their pre-wedding domestic dispute, both Solo and Stevens have found themselves in hot water. In June 2014, domestic violence charges were brought against the professional soccer player after she was arrested for on accusations of hitting her sister and nephew during a family get-together.
Solo entered a not-guilty plea, but publicly apologized for the incident, writing on Facebook, “I would like to apologize to my fans, teammates, coaches, marketing partners and the entire US Soccer and Seattle Reign FC communities for my involvement in a highly unfortunate incident this past weekend.”
The case was later dismissed in January 2015 after the victims and witnesses in the case refused to cooperate. Later that month, Stevens was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in California. According to the Los Angeles Times, he pleaded no contest to the drunk driving charges and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and four years’ probation.
In 2016, Solo was suspended by the U.S. Soccer Federation and forced to retire after she made negative comments about the Swedish women’s soccer team. The couple were living in Seattle at the time — where Solo played for the Seattle Reign — and decided to travel across the country to North Carolina in an RV, which they lived in for a year.
Stevens and Solo welcomed twins in 2020
The couple announced in December 2019 that they were expecting twins, and they welcomed son Vittorio Genghis and daughter Lozen Orianna Judith on March 4, 2020. Solo announced the births on Instagram with photos of both Vittorio and Lozen side by side. Two years prior, Solo experienced a miscarriage, also with twins.
In March 2021, she celebrated their first birthday with a few family photos, and said: “Two days ago we celebrated Lozen and Vittorio’s first birthday! .. We feel the love, they feel the love, and every day has been as exhausting as it was rewarding.”
Just a few months later, Solo celebrated Father’s Day by sharing a photo of Stevens holding their children with the caption, “I could never have chosen a better father for our children. Happy Father’s Day!”
