More than a year after a construction worker was hit and killed on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, police have accused a Grand Crossing woman of hitting him and failing to report the accident that caused his death.
Kenneth Hernandez was standing in a construction zone near Belmont Harbor late at night in April 2023 when a black sedan hit him and sped off, authorities said at the time.
Bahiyyah Bost, 50, now faces felony charges of failing to report a fatal accident and reckless homicide in a construction zone, according to court records.
Shortly after she allegedly struck 45-year-old Hernandez, Bost got into another crash with a second driver, police said. She then fled the scene of the second accident with a caved-in windshield and ran a red light at the intersection of Pratt Boulevard and Sheridan Road, nearly hitting three people in the crosswalk.
Police said Bost turned herself in Thursday. Records show that Hernandez’s survivors filed a personal injury lawsuit against Bost and the city of Chicago in October 2023. That case is set for a hearing Sept. 18.
Lawyers representing Bost and Hernandez’s survivors didn’t immediately return requests for comment.
Cook County Judge William Fahy ordered Bost released on electronic monitoring at a detention hearing Friday morning, court records show. She is next scheduled to appear in court Sept. 18.
