A well-known organised crime figure – known as the “angel of death” – was gunned down in an “execution-style murder” in Sydney overnight, in what police believe is the first organised crime-related murder in the city in six months.
29-year-old Tarek Ayoub, who police said is connected to several organised crime networks, was gunned down outside an apartment building in Parramatta in a “hail of bullets” at about 3.30am.
“He was known colloquially as the angel of death. He lived by the sword. Died by the sword. There’s no surprise to the police that he was murdered in the way he has been murdered,” NSW police detective superintendent Danny Doherty, told reporters on Monday.
The site at Harold Street was still cordoned off mid-morning as specialist forensic police investigated.
A second crime scene was set up in nearby Granville, where a stolen sedan was found alight about 3.45am.
Two men were reportedly seen leaving the scene in another vehicle, police said.
Investigators were unsure if the two incidents were connected but the fire was being treated as suspicious.
