Jon Cryer recently shared that he was ‘unaware’ of Demi Moore‘s addiction struggles when they dated briefly in the 1980s.
The Two And A Half Men vet, 59, and the Ghost actress, 61, began a romantic relationship while co-starring in the 1984 comedy No Small Affair.
‘We dated for a short time while we were working on No Small Affair, but I guess our particular affair was, in fact, pretty small,’ the actor told People on Saturday.
‘She was already struggling with a drug problem. One that I was blissfully unaware of until a couple of weeks before the movie ended,’ he added.
Demi would enter rehab during the filming of 1985’s St. Elmo’s Fire at the request of the movie’s director, Joel Schumacher, according to her 2019 memoir Inside Out.

She relapsed and sought treatment again in 2012 for issues related to trauma, codependency, and substance abuse.
In her memoir, Demi also reflected on her relationship with Jon, mentioning she thought she was his first sexual partner — a claim Jon later disputed.
‘Well, the good thing about this is she doesn’t have to feel bad about it anymore, because while I’m sure she was totally justified making that assumption based on my my skill level (and the stunned look on my face at the time), I had actually lost my virginity in high school,’ he tweeted.
‘But she’s right [about] the other part, I was over the moon for her during a very troubled time in her life. I have nothing but affection for her and not a regret in the world,’ Jon added.
He echoed the sentiment during his People interview, saying, ‘She was incredibly charismatic and had a much better grasp of the business than I did.’
He added: She knew everyone in town, but we were both really nervous about being leads in a movie for the first time.
‘What would always be great about her was already evident; that incredible combination of vulnerability, toughness and beauty.’
Demi’s battles with addiction during St. Elmo’s Fire are also discussed in her former co-star Andrew McCarthy’s forthcoming Hulu documentary, Brats, shedding light on the experiences of the Brat Pack actors.

The Brat Pack, a group of young actors prominent in the 1980s — including Demi, Andrew, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe — became cultural icons known for their roles in coming-of-age films that captured the essence of youth and rebellion.
Demi revealed the St. Elmo’s Fire production ‘paid to have a sober companion with me 24/7, during the whole shooting.’
She also commended Schumacher, expressing gratitude for his support and acknowledging that he took a risk to stand by her.
‘They could have just found someone else,’ she said. ‘Because it’s not like I had any box-office draw. You know, we were all just beginning.
‘I didn’t have anything to really warrant him sticking by me.’
Jon also commented on the Brat documentary, telling People: ‘I didn’t perceive myself as part of the ‘Brat Pack’ because I didn’t think I was one of the cool kids.
‘And they were definitely the cool kids. I thought the two films that defined the group were The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire, neither of which was I in.’
Following her role in St. Elmo’s Fire, Demi continued to build her career with notable films like Ghost (1990), A Few Good Men (1992), and Indecent Proposal (1993), among others.
Cryer gained recognition for his portrayal of Duckie in Pretty in Pink (1986) alongside Ringwald.

Meanwhile, Demi is in the midst of another Hollywood renaissance.
In May, she made her comeback at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 in her first appearance on the red carpet of the famed event since 1997.
The actress made her unexpected return in the slasher-horror The Substance’, which competed for the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.
She will also be seen in the upcoming TV series Landman.
