El Niño continues to keep the Pacific Ocean bustling this hurricane season. Tropical Storm Norbert will dissipate before becoming a hurricane, but Invest 97E is forecast to become the next named storm of the basin in a day or so.

THE TAKEAWAY

  • Tropical Storm Norbert will dissipate by midweek without becoming a hurricane.
  • Invest 97E is likely to be named Odalys by Monday.
  • Another tropical threat could emerge after Invest 97E.

Tropical Storm Norbert is no longer going to be the Pacific’s next hurricane, but Invest 97E could be the next named storm in the next day or so.

Norbert is a modest little tropical storm, moving west with winds of 50 mph as of the National Hurricane Center’s latest update.

Dry air wrapping around the system is limiting its development despite thunderstorm activity, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Norbert will continue battling dry air and light wind shear. But, upper-level winds are expected to increase, forcing the storm into a steady weakening trend.

The storm is forecast to lose its tropical characteristics and become a post-tropical remnant low by Wednesday, before fully dissipating, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Norbert no longer poses a threat to Hawaii, but the south side of the islands are likely to see some larger swells in the coming days as the storm dissipates.

Pacific not settling down yet…

As is the norm for this season, that’s not all that’s going on in the Pacific, because hot on Norbert’s heels is another system which is likely to get a name by Monday.

Invest 97E was declared on Friday, and odds continue growing that it will become Odalys, with a 90% chance of development in the next two days.

Like Norbert, Invest 97E will generally move west over very warm Pacific waters. Initially, conditions will be ripe for the system to consolidate and strengthen into a tropical storm, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Computer forecast models agree that 97E will also hit hostile conditions that Norbert battled, with an abundance of dry air working into the core of the storm, preventing new thunderstorms from developing.

“All reliable forecast models have the storm dissipating before it ever comes close to being in the vicinity of Hawaii,” the FOX Forecast Center said.

It’s forecast that another tropical threat will pop up in the Pacific before long.

At this time, it also would have no threat to land in the next 10 to 14 days, but we are keeping a close eye as something spins up.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

El Niño has kept the Pacific quite busy this season, as we still have about two and a half months to go and are already up to the “O” named storm of the season.
