Tyler Perry has built an entertainment empire by dreaming up dramatic rescues. This time, the “Madea” creator stepped into a real-life crisis that did not come with a script.
His generosity has become nearly as famous as his movies. Perry frequently helps struggling families, elderly homeowners and entertainers facing financial hardship. When he sees someone in trouble, he often responds before the applause begins.
The filmmaker learned about the homeowner’s nightmare after watching a Fox 32 Chicago report.
What he saw moved him to take action.
Still, his generous intervention has not erased questions about how the situation spiraled so far out of control.
Brenda Daurham, an 81-year-old widow and retired hairstylist, had been displaced from her Markham, Illinois, home for six months. A pipe burst beneath her kitchen sink on Valentine’s Day. Water flooded the property and left the house unlivable.
Allstate denied Daurham’s insurance claim.
The company cited policy exclusions involving deterioration, wear and tear, and continuous seepage. Daurham reportedly held a homeowners policy with Allstate for more than 40 years.
Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services performed emergency mitigation work. However, the company was not paid. It later placed a $17,827.96 mechanic’s lien on Daurham’s home.
That is when Perry entered the picture with his checkbook open.
The media mogul paid the lien. He also provided another $25,000 to help restore the property. His total contribution reached approximately $43,000, USA Today reports.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Daurham told Fox 32 reporter Tia Ewing. “I have been following Tyler Perry since he was at the Regal Theater.”
The longtime Perry fan said his generosity did not completely surprise her.
“He’s helped so many people, all the older stars,” she explained.
Daurham remains grateful. However, she has not released Allstate from the hot seat.
“Tyler Perry paid the lien and we appreciate it, but we do not feel like Allstate should get away free,” she said.
Daurham continues to pay the company every month. Allstate told Fox 32 that it evaluates losses and applies coverage fairly. The company declined to discuss the details of her claim. It cited customer privacy.
Meanwhile, help has continued to pour in.
The owner of S2 Grill offered Daurham new appliances, furniture and lighting. Black Men United pledged kitchen supplies and flooring. The organization also offered roofing shingles and other materials needed to make the property livable.
Daurham spent months watching her house fall apart. Now, the community is helping her put it back together.
People on Threads applauded Perry after civil rights attorney Ben Crump shared the story. Several commenters also encouraged Daurham to find another insurer.
“Someone help her get new insurance. All State means her no good,” one person wrote.
Another fan refused to let Perry’s critics spoil the moment.
“And this is why yall can’t make me hate Tyler. He’s not perfect, but he has a big heart and loves his people,” the supporter added. “Good Deeds and God is sooooo good. Tyler is a good person,” one person declared.
Another commenter focused on Daurham’s age and the ordeal she endured.
“I can’t understand mistreating elderly people. I’m so happy for this lady and thanks Tyler Perry!!” the person wrote.
Others were ready to show Allstate the door.
“I hope if you got Allstate them policies getting cancelled people!” one critic warned. “Justice and true Christian work. Allstate should be ashamed of themselves. Now we know who not to insure with because of her claim denial!” another person wrote.
One commenter suggested Allstate needed the same consumer pressure once aimed at another big brand.
“God bless everyone who helped, prayed or called Allstate need the Target treatment. Run her that 18,” the person said.
Another fan praised the village that formed around Daurham.
“Now this is the village that I remember growing up with.. If you need a cup of sugar I got you.. If you need milk I got you.. If I need a ride they got me… Lord, please bring this back, because God were going to need to lean on each other,” the commenter wrote.
Perry’s response follows a familiar pattern.
Perry also helped Xernna Nieves, a Georgia mother of four. Her family faced eviction while her teenage son battled severe aplastic anemia. Perry offered to cover the family’s rent for an entire year.
His generosity has extended beyond individual families. Perry committed $2.75 million to help more than 300 low-income senior homeowners in Atlanta. The initiative addressed rising property taxes. It was also designed to protect longtime residents from being pushed out by gentrification.
Perry has linked his giving to his difficult journey. He endured periods of homelessness before finding success in entertainment.
“When you’ve been given a lot, you have to do a lot. And the need is great,” he told AARP. “I’ve tried to align myself with people who have the same sensibility when it comes to helping others.”
Daurham is now getting closer to returning home. Her insurance dispute is far from settled.
Perry may have removed the lien. However, Allstate still has some explaining to do.
