School, soccer practice, a shift at work or a friend’s house. Teens have places to go, and parents can’t always be there for every ride. Uber is giving families a new way to check in.
The company is adding live video streaming to Uber Teen Accounts, allowing a linked parent or guardian to see their teen inside the vehicle during an active ride. The feed comes from the front-facing camera on the driver’s smartphone.
Uber says the feature is live now in nine U.S. markets. Uber plans a nationwide rollout over the coming weeks.
If you have a teen who uses Uber, the idea may sound reassuring. However, a live camera inside the car also raises privacy questions. Who can watch? Does Uber see the stream? What happens to the video after the ride? Uber gave CyberGuy more detail on exactly how the feature works.

How Uber Teen Accounts live video works
Uber launched Teen Accounts in 2023 to give teenagers more independence while keeping their rides connected to a parent or guardian. Now, live video adds another option for families who want more visibility during a trip.
If a driver has live video enabled, Uber sends a push notification to the parent or guardian linked to the teen’s account when the ride begins. The parent can tap the notification and watch the live feed through the driver’s front-facing smartphone camera.
Uber says both the teen and the driver receive a notification when the parent begins watching. Everyone inside the vehicle knows when the live stream is active. Only the parent or guardian linked to the teen’s account can view the live video during the trip, according to Uber. Uber also told CyberGuy that the company cannot access the live video in real time.
Where Uber teen live video is available
The feature is starting in a limited number of U.S. markets before expanding more broadly.
Uber told CyberGuy that live video is currently available in:
- Atlanta
- Phoenix
- Orlando
- Raleigh-Durham
- Portland, Oregon
- San Antonio
- Cleveland
- Rhode Island
- El Paso
Uber says it will roll out live video nationwide over the coming weeks. Keep in mind that availability also depends on whether the driver has live video enabled.
What happens to the video after an Uber ride?
This is the privacy detail parents should know before using the feature. Uber says the live video is encrypted. After the trip, the driver cannot access the recording. The teen cannot access it either. The linked parent or guardian also loses access once the ride ends.
However, the encrypted recording does remain on Uber’s servers for a period of time. Uber told CyberGuy that the encrypted video recording is automatically deleted after 14 days, unless it has been shared as part of a safety report. The company says it may access the decryption key when investigating a reported safety incident. Uber says that access is limited to that safety investigation.
If a submitted file becomes part of a safety-related report, Uber says it will keep the file according to its data retention policies. So, parents get a live view during the ride, but they cannot go back later and replay the trip.

Why Uber is adding live video to Teen Accounts
Uber says Teen Accounts grew from an idea from parents and feedback from drivers. Since launching in 2023, the service has expanded to more than 50 countries. Uber says families now use Teen Accounts for tens of millions of trips every year .
Live video builds on safety tools already available for teen rides. Parents can use live trip tracking and PIN verification. Uber also offers audio recording as another safety feature.
The new video option gives parents something a map cannot provide: a real-time look inside the vehicle. For a parent watching a ride take an unexpected turn or run longer than expected, that extra visibility could be reassuring.
The privacy trade-off parents should know
I can see why this feature will appeal to many families. Watching your teen safely travel across town can offer reassurance that a moving dot on a map cannot provide. At the same time, you are introducing a camera feed into the ride. Parents should understand what happens to that video before deciding how often they want to use it.

Tips for parents using Uber Teen Accounts
Live video can be helpful, but a few simple habits can make teen rides safer from the start.
- Check the ride details before your teen gets in. Make sure the driver’s name, vehicle and license plate match what appears in the Uber app.
- Talk about when you will use live video. Setting expectations ahead of time can help your teen understand whether you plan to check every ride or only when something seems unusual.
- Keep Uber’s available safety features turned on. Use live trip tracking and PIN verification alongside live video when those tools are available for the ride.
- Have a backup plan. Make sure your teen knows how to contact you, reach Uber’s safety tools or call 911 if they ever feel threatened or unsafe.
It is also worth reminding your teen to trust their instincts. If the driver, vehicle or situation looks different from what appears in the app, they should stay out of the car and contact you.
What this means to you
If your teenager already uses Uber, live video gives you another way to check on a ride without repeatedly calling or texting. Still, I would talk with your teen before the feature becomes part of your routine.
Some parents may want to open the feed only when something seems off. Others may check briefly at the beginning of a ride. The right approach will depend on your teen’s age and how much independence your family is comfortable giving them.
Also, remember that live video depends on the driver having the feature enabled. You should still pay attention to the trip details shown in the Uber app. Technology can give you more visibility, but your teen should also know what to do when a ride feels wrong.
