Acclaimed, Controversial Play ‘Downstate’ To Get Broadway Staging

The marquee at Broadway‘s Booth Theatre appears to confirm the rumors: Bruce Norris‘ acclaimed and controversial play Downstate will take up residence at the venue in an upcoming production directed by Joe Mantello.

The news was first reported by the Chicago Tribune – the play premiered in 2018 at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company – with the newspaper noting that the Broadway staging will be produced by Scott Rudin and feature at least two members of the original Chicago cast: Francis Guinan and K. Todd Freeman.

The Chicago staging was followed by an Off Broadway production at Playwrights Horizons in 2022. Both of those productions were directed by Pam MacKinnon, not Mantello.

The play, set in a group home for people convicted of sex crimes, received overwhelmingly positive reviews for the Off Broadway production, winning the 2023 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.

Specifically, the plot follows four men who have been convicted of sex offenses and have completed their prison sentences but remain on the sex offender registry and live in a group home in downstate Illinois. During the course of the play, one of the men is confronted by a former student.

The Rudin-Mantello pairing would reunite the two following their massively successful, Tony-winning 2026 revival of Death of a Salesman starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf. Rudin, Mantello and Metcalf also collaborated on Samuel D. Hunter’s play Little Bear Ridge Road last season following its premiere at Steppenwolf (the Chicago company did not participate in the Broadway staging of that play).

The Broadway premiere of Downstate has not been officially announced, and aside from the marquee lights no Downstate signage on the Booth is evident. Deadline has reached out to sources for confirmation of the plans.

The play, which has also been staged in the West End and Washington, D.C., came under fire from right-wing commentators and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who responded to a favorable review in the Washington Post by tweeting, “So now the corporate media is praising pedophilia.”

Norris, whose play Clybourne Park won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, responded to the controversy prior to its Off Broadway engagement in a statement quoted by Playbill: “A depiction of something is not an endorsement. But, I do think that witnessing the lives of characters on stage encourages identification, and if you spend two hours in the company of a group of sex offenders, do you emerge from the experience with your certainty about them momentarily disrupted? The goal is not to forgive, but rather to complicate an easy and casually cruel response.”

In addition to the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, the Off Broadway production won the Obie Award for Playwriting.

Broadway Up Close, an organization providing guided walking tours of the Broadway district and theaters, posted video of the Downstate marquee being erected at the Booth:
