Tent camping banned due to wolves at 4 national park sites until October

Video captures the horrifying moment a Yellowstone bison rampages through the Bridge Bay Campground, catapulting 65-year-old grandfather feet into the air. Reports indicate the man suffered multiple broken bones and is recovering in the hospital.

Tent camping at several different campgrounds within a popular National Park is prohibited because of an increase in human-wildlife interactions recently.

Isle Royale National Park announced on Friday that tent camping and hammock usage at four different campsites was not allowed because of improper food storage and an increase in wolf activity in the recent past.

The campsites where tent camping is banned are: Three Mile, Daisy Farm, Moskey Basin and Caribou Island.

Off-trail camping near these four campgrounds was also not allowed.

The closure is in effect starting Friday and until the national park closes on Halloween.

“The park continues to receive reports of wolves being interested in tents at these campgrounds, pawing and digging at tents and entering tents to drag packs and sleeping pads away,” Isle Royale National Park said in a news release.

For those wanting to camp at Isle Royale National Park, all other campgrounds remain open at this time, and there are 32 shelters open at the four closed campgrounds for camping.

“Fall is a lovely time to visit the park, and all Isle Royale campgrounds remain open,” said Park Superintendent Denice Swanke.

Wolf activity became a concern in July, when the national park closed Three Mile Campground for several weeks because of a wolf pawing at and sniffing tents, dragging away backpacks and even entering a tent.

Isle Royale National Park reminded that visitors are required to utilize proper food storage to prevent an increase in human-wolf interactions like the ones above.

“At all campgrounds in the park, food, trash, and scented items must be stored in food storage lockers or in animal-resistant, hard-sided containers,” the National Park said.
