Strong 6.0 earthquake strikes near Somalia, rattling residents across the region

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit Italy on Friday, causing a tv to fall off a wall and items to fall off shelves at a cafe in Pozzuoli, near where the earthquake happened.

Residents across Somalia were rattled by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake on Thursday.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake struck at approximately 12:07 a.m. local time Friday (around 5:07 p.m. ET) 91 miles north of Caluula at a depth of 6.3 miles.

Earthquake reported in Somalia. 

So far, the USGS has reported several instances of shaking near the border between Djibouti and Somalia, where a cluster of reports has been recorded. Shaking was also felt in Yemen.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

According to the USGS, the initial earthquake had an estimated intensity of IV on the Mercalli intensity scale, meaning the shaking was strong enough to be felt indoors and may have awakened some residents.

Dishes, windows and doors may have rattled, walls may have made cracking sounds, and heavy objects striking buildings may have been felt. Cars also may have rocked noticeably.

Earthquakes above magnitude 6.0 are not common in and around Somalia, making events of this size rare and significant for the region, according to officials.
