TULSA, Okla — Oasis Fresh Markets started with its first location in north Tulsa with the intention of helping its underserved community.

Owner and Founder AJ Johnson aims to keep that mission in mind as he’s expanded.

“We’re launching our Add Milk program where we are the first store in the state of Oklahoma to have the USDA partnership and what that is $1 for dollar match for individuals that are on EBT that will receive free additional dollars,” he said. “We will also have, shout out to Hunger Free Oklahoma, we’ll have the Double Up program. We will also have our rewards program, where you can get free groceries.”

He also told 2 News that there will be perks for tribal members part of the Creek and Cherokee Nations.

Johnson said he now has a location at 62nd and Peoria to really extend the outreach, as he prepares for the downtown grand opening.

FLORES: “Why did you choose downtown?”

JOHNSON: “There’s tremendous investments going in. There’s so much housing and apartments going and condos coming into downtown that it only makes sense to as Tulsa now is considered a large city, a metropolitan.”

Johnson said the last 18 months to get the store up and running haven’t always been smooth-sailing, but he’s excited for what’s to come.

“There was a big rush, and then tariffs, and then we had some different challenges and vendors, and then there was another reinsurance,” he said. “Oasis downtown will be open by or before Labor Day!”

Johnson said he wants to give customers a premium experience while also pouring back into the economy by investing in local vendors.

“Fresh, organic, and local,” he said. “We’ll have organic produce. We’ll have organic meats, and we will have libations.”

He also said he wants Oasis to continue being a place people can turn to when times get tough.

“There’s a special group of people and our staff that have just stayed committed to our mission, and that is being a refuge, a safe place to shelter, and so now with having that store in North Tulsa, the mothership,” he said. “All races, all demographics are welcome here at Oasis.”
