Images from around La Guaira, Venezuela show the extent of damage following back-to-back major earthquakes on Wednesday night. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

UPAHUACHO, Peru – A magnitude 6.7 earthquake rattled central Peru, the latest in a series of strong quakes along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 23.6 miles northwest of Upahuacho, Peru, at a depth of 41.4 miles at 2:00 p.m. EDT on Aug. 20.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake occurred on Aug. 20, roughly 24 miles northwest of Upahuacho, Peru, at 2 p.m. ET.

Preliminary USGS estimates indicate that roughly 197,000 people felt moderate shaking, with areas near the epicenter, including Coracora, experiencing strong shaking.

Light shaking was reported in Cusco, a populous city in the Peruvian Andes that was once the capital of the Inca Empire, as well as in Ayacucho.

For the impacted region, which the USGS characterizes as containing “structures that are highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist,” preliminary estimates indicate a low likelihood of fatalities and economic losses.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
