HILO, Hawaii — A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Hawaii‘s Big Island Monday evening beneath an undersea volcano, part of unrest that began this past Sunday, according to the USGS.
There are no reports of damage on the Big Island, although shaking was felt in Hilo.

The quake struck just before 6 p.m. local time, about 26 miles off the Big Island and 7 miles below sea level; Tsunami Warnings were not issued.
The earthquake was centered beneath the Kamaʻehuakanaloa undersea volcano, formerly known as the Lo’ihi Seamount, and was associated with volcanic unrest rather than tectonic activity, the USGS said.

Kama‘ehuakanaloa is about 19 miles off the Big Island and its peak is about 0.6 miles below sea level.

This magnitude 5.2 quake is not expected to impact the Kilauea or Mauna Loa volcanoes on the Big Island, although the USGS warned that aftershocks are possible in the coming days.
“Intermittent earthquake activity has been recorded in the vicinity of Kama‘ehuakanaloa (Lō‘ihi) since as early as 1952,” the USGS said Tuesday.
